N2 diagram creation

Dear all,

I’m quite fond of N² diagrams for managing interfaces as it provides a nice, quick overview, but can’t seem to find such option in Capella. Do I miss something? If not, is there a particular reason that this is not implemented?

Regards,
Sebastiaan

Hi Sebastiaan,

There are indeed no N² diagrams or DSM in Capella, so no, you didn’t miss anything. I must confess I don’t know the actual reason, even if I can think of some possible ones (preference for a focus on graphical representations, level of specificity that it could require etc.).

But as solutions / workarounds in case it helps, Samares developed an open-source AI for Capella add-on, which is currently in the Lab 4 Capella here: GitHub - labs4capella/DSM4Capella · GitHub . And if it does not do what you need, Python for Capella might be a good way to develop something relatively fast, provided you know a bit of Python.

Extracting the information to produce an N2 matrix is not difficult, various methods to do this using Python4Capella etc. The harder part is elicit the functional groupings.

Have a read of this:

Just found this paper on the subject. Well worth a read: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2407.03739
